Concertos for One and All
This program begins with Ralph Vaughn Williams' Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra, composed with the purpose of bringing together seasoned players with those of less experience and even beginners. The South Shore Symphony joins the Orchestra for Talented Youth from Oyster Bay, directed by South Shore Symphony cellist Frances Dial, and students from Rockville Centre and surrounding communities for this massive celebration of the string orchestra. The solo violin then becomes the focus of the evening as the South Shore Symphony's gifted concertmaster, Susan Hytken, performs the beautiful Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in G major K. 216 of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Our season ends with one of the most challenging works ever written for the symphony orchestra: the rollicking and ever popular Concerto for Orchestra of Bela Bartok, so titled because every section of the orchestra gets a star turn.
